MOSCOW, July 2. / TASS /. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will meet on Friday with his Bahraini counterpart Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani, on a working visit to the Russian capital.
This is Al Alzayani’s second trip to Russia since his appointment as the Kingdom’s Foreign Minister in February 2020. In June 2021, he participated in the events of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The upcoming ministerial meeting is expected to help maintain a confidence-based political dialogue on regional and international issues and will discuss topical issues regarding the further development of Russian-Bahraini relations.
Mutually beneficial relationships
In 2020, diplomatic relations between the two countries turned 30 years. According to the message TASS received from the kingdom’s embassy in Russia, decades of cooperation have benefited both countries.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Moscow and Manama are linked by traditionally friendly relations, the countries maintain regular political dialogue at different levels. The ministers’ meeting will provide an in-depth discussion of topical issues concerning the further development of the whole cooperation, the practical implementation of the agreements reached during the contacts between Russian President Vladimir Putin and King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
The Russian Foreign Ministry sees the visit of the Foreign Minister as another important step towards building multifaceted bilateral relations, developing peace and stability in the Persian Gulf area and promoting a constructive agenda throughout the Middle East region.
Business interaction: trade and air transport
The Bahraini Embassy in Moscow told TASS that among the most important issues, ministers will discuss the resumption of direct flights between the two countries, interrupted by the pandemic, as well as the continued training of Bahraini students in Russia.
Particular attention to the talks, as planned, will be paid to increasing the volume of the mutual partnership in trade and investment, boosting the work of the Russia-Bahrain Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation and the building of cultural and humanitarian links.
The Russian Foreign Ministry drew attention to the fact that at the end of 2020, due to the unfavorable economic situation and the drop in world energy prices linked to the coronavirus pandemic, the volume of Two-way trade decreased by 53% compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to $ 21.3 million.
In this regard, an important role in improving trade in goods is attributed to the bilateral intergovernmental commission. Currently, the question of organizing its third meeting in Manama is under consideration.
The ministers will also discuss key aspects of Russian-Bahraini cooperation within the UN and other multilateral platforms.
Urgent question: Sputnik V production
Cooperation in the fight against the pandemic will not be ignored either. Bahraini authorities have already approved the use of Russian vaccines Sputnik V and Sputnik Light in the kingdom. Sputnik V has already demonstrated an efficiency of 94.3%.
Cooperation between the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and Bahraini sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat is also developing at a good pace. Thus, the RDIF, the Mumtalakat Foundation and the Binnopharm group (which is part of Sistema) have agreed to create a company for the production of the Sputnik V vaccine in the kingdom. This company’s products are expected to be supplied to markets in the Middle East and North Africa.
