Amazon Web Services Inc. today shared details of how a few of its customers have used Amazon Textract and other artificial intelligence offerings in its public cloud to respond to operational changes during the pandemic.

Amazon Textract is an AI service managed in the AWS cloud that can extract text from documents. This is a specialized capability, but applicable to a wide range of use cases, as virtually every organization processes documents as part of their operations. This wide applicability is part of the reason why AWS competitors have also introduced AI text extraction solutions.

BlueVine Inc., a heavily funded California startup with an online banking platform for businesses, used Textract to process Paycheck Protection Program loan applications. According to AWS, the startup managed to create an automated loan processing workflow within days with Textract at its core. BlueVine processed more than $ 4.5 billion in loans for approximately 155,000 small businesses in four months and estimates its efforts have helped save 470,000 jobs.

Another AWS customer who has adopted Texttract to help meet growing demand is the HelloSign electronic signature provider. HelloSign, a subsidiary of Dropbox Inc. since last year, used Textract’s document analysis features to enable users of its HelloWorks service to process forms and other documents with less manual labor. HelloWorks helped unnamed ‘popular on-demand grocery delivery service’ onboard millions of shoppers in weeks, while a New York-based emergency department adopted the service to register new patients .

AWS is also supporting efforts to develop better COVID-19 prediction models. The cloud giant explained today how a research group including the University of California at Irvine, Rackspace Technology and others built a model on its platform that can generate disease predictions for countries, States, counties and specific zip codes. The group used Amazon Forecast and AWS’s DeepAR + algorithm in the project.

Amazon Forecast is a service for running AI models on time series information or data point collections organized in the order they were created. The DeepAR + algorithm, in turn, is a pre-packaged supervised machine learning algorithm for generating forecasts from time series information.

The set of AI features that AWS has developed in its cloud are used in a wide variety of areas. Carrier Global Corp. uses AWS AI tools to power Lynx, a recently announced analytics platform it is developing to help businesses such as retailers optimize their supply chains. The NFL, meanwhile, last year in partnership with the cloud giant to improve player health and safety through machine learning.
